Woodpeckers Large and Small

Thursday, December 13th, 2018
Downy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 December 2018.

Downy Woodpecker (male).

This single-digit (F) morning, I heard a tiny rapping. I knew what it was before I saw the bird: Downy Woodpecker. Very soon after, I heard a deep, muffled whacking. I knew what it was, too: Pileated Woodpecker.

Buffleheads

Wednesday, December 12th, 2018
Buffleheads, Rockport Harbor, Rockport, Maine, 12 December 2018.

Buffleheads.

It’s a good thing we get Buffleheads in the off-season. This cold, breezy morning on the hill, with a fresh inch or two of snow everywhere, produced no bird sightings at all (although I did hear the voices of a couple). So I took a spin down to the harbor.

Sure enough, a bunch of species were hanging around the calm saltwater. Most photogenic among them was a little gang of little diving ducks.

Cold Morning Bluebirds

Tuesday, December 11th, 2018
Eastern Bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 December 2018.

Eastern Bluebird.

So quiet on the hill this frosty morning. So calm. I stood for long moments in several places, just listening to faint and distant sounds. Multiple species right around the parking lot—then, toward the summit, a little flock of bluebirds.

(This day I saw them before I heard them for a change.)
