Roadside Sharpie

Saturday, February 25th, 2017
Sharp-shinned Hawk (juvie), near Clam Cove, Rockport, Maine, 25 February 2017.

Sharp-shinned Hawk (juvie).

Thick morning fog and balmy temps
Pushed and pulled us up the slope
Leaving robins, crows, and black-caps
To keep track of our muddy tramp.

Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 25 February 2017.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Driving home I saw a little sharpie
Perched bolt upright on a fat tightrope
Of cable stretched between power poles—
A hawk scanning the fog for prey.

Blue Fog

Thursday, February 23rd, 2017
Raven in fog, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 23 February 2017.

Raven in fog.

Thirties (F) this morning, with the whole of the world cloaked in a blue fog. Heard—then saw—a pair of ravens. Saw about a million robins. Not really. But a hundred, at least. Jack and I chased them up and down the hill.

American Robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 23 February 2017.

American Robin.

The sun emerged after a while, and the temperature rose, and another inch or two of snow melted.

Sure were a lot of robins up there in that blue fog.
