Crows only

Overcast, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 February 2016.

Overcast.

Not a bad winter day. Kind of a great winter day, actually. Upper 20s (F), not too breezy, mostly overcast. Got up kind of early and so got a jump on some desk work and took a relatively early hike with ma dawg.

One other car in the lot when we got there in early afternoon. Lovely sky, with precious few scraps of blue.

As for birds, only crows. (“Only”—ha.)

Bird listening

Mourning dove, near Mount Battie, Camden, Maine, 10 February 2016.

Mourning dove.

Cold and still today, with a gunmetal-gray sky. Worked until mid-afternoon, then headed out with Jack. Just a couple others on the hill today—and several birds.

A moment, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, Maine, 10 February 2016.

A moment.

However, I saw none of them—the birds. Just heard ’em. Pays to know a few notes and calls and subtle vocalizations.

Such a beautiful overcast afternoon with a peach-colored glow in the west. I love my daily hike with dog.

A winter’s day

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016
Bohemian Waxwing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 February 2016.

Bohemian Waxwing.

Snowed into the night last night, and this morning’s light revealed maybe a fresh five inches. Everything smoothed over, cleaned up, evened out. Cold—teens early, reaching the 20s (F)—but not too windy. The sun peeked in and out all day.

Oak, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 February 2016.

Oak.

Took a midday hike with Jack. Took snowshoes but didn’t wear ’em. Nobody else on the hill when we got there about 12:30. Nice hike. Lovely light. No birds, though—until we got nearly all the way back to the parking lot, when I noticed a flock of waxwings in a crabapple tree across the road. Two dozen maybe. Stood there taking photos while waiting for the sun to emerge from the clouds. Waited about ten or fifteen minutes. No luck. Moved on.

Spent more time at my desk in afternoon. Got quite a bit done. Sun went down. Watched a little TV.

Tomorrow is another winter’s day.
