Tree sparrows

American Tree Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 10 December 2015.

American Tree Sparrow.

Gray and drippy and foggy and warm. A lot of desk work, and at the end of the day a brisk hike with Jack on a lonesome, darkling hill. Several bird species up there, though I only saw one: a pair of American Tree Swallows flitting nervously about in the trailside bushes.

November bouquet.

So dark it was I took a few flash photos just to have something decent to post here. Still thinking about the tree sparrows, though.

Peach-streaked sky

Hairy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 December 2015.

Hairy Woodpecker.

Gray and nippy—but dry, without much wind. The stream out back has slowed down some, but the little flock of neighborhood doves still likes poking around down there.

Monhegan Island, from Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 December 2015.

Monhegan Island.

Late to the hill with dog. Nobody else there but me, Jack, and a few birds. That is, until we were descending and met a couple fellow hikers.

Nippy and gray—but off to the south, Monhegan Island floated beneath a warm-looking, peach-streaked sky.

Photo ops

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015
Staghorn, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 December 2015.

Staghorn.

Mostly overcast today. Cooler than yesterday. Got a lot of type-design work done, then took Jack for a hike for a change. Haha! Just kidding.

Beech Nut, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 December 2015.

Beech Nut.

On our daily Beech Hill ascent, I heard a few birds but didn’t see any. (Elsewhere, I saw a few.) But the scenery—especially that mostly-overcast sky, as daylight diminished—gave me a few photo ops.

Just checked the weather: no snow in the forecast for ten days. What a difference a year makes.
