Good Gloom

Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay, East MIllcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 13 December 2021.
Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay.

A warmish (40s F), overcast, breezy morning when dog and I started up the switchback. A fair selection of birds above the neighborhood, but low numbers compared to recent days. A siren rose from the basin, and a family of coyotes broke into song. Heard the solitaire down below.

Plenty of evidence of deer on the deer trails: hoof prints all over the place, snow cleared away for access to greenery. We even spooked a big one coming up the trail—then, on our return trip, I spied at least five more, just chillin’ up the north slope above the gully.

Added an American Goldfinch on our return. A good gloomy hike in a wildly beautiful landscape.

Glimpse of Pine Siskin, East Millcreek Salt Lake City, Utah, 12 December 2021.
Glimpse of Pine Siskin.

At this wintry time of year, most of the birds on my daily list come from down near the neighborhood. This overcast morning the only birds I counted up on the deer trails were magpie and chickadee.

When dog and I descended toward the trailhead, a great gathering of birds greeted us. Across the street is a feeder, and apparently the vegetation down below offers tasty morsels. Not only more chickadees and finches and corvids, but flicker and towhee and plenty of juncos, along with a random siskin and kinglet.

(Would’ve posted a pic of the kinglet, but it was moving fast and my focus was off. Oh, well!)

Lovely Morn

Black-capped Chickadee, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 11 December 2021.
Black-capped Chickadee.

The temperature dipped—low-20s (F)—and the snow stuck around, and I had a lovely morning hike with Captain Jack. Unlike a couple days ago, the slipper trails warranted grips, and I was glad to have a pair.

Birds about. Not too many, but enough to make things exciting—a random, croaking raven fly-by might’ve been the highlight. Many finches still. Also a bunch of deer.

The air tasted crisp and clean.
