Scarcity

Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 11 September 2021.
Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay.

Got up the trails earlier this morning. Thundershowers were possible, so we took advantage of the clear conditions, dog an I. And did not encounter many birds at all. Few species, few individuals. And only one that posed for a photo.

It was a scrub-jay—a scrub-jay that looked rather like an old bird, with a long white beard.

Other than running into trail pals (human and dog), it turned out to be a rather unremarkable late summer morning. (Would’ve been more remarkable had we not beat a thundershower back to the truck.)

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
