American robins, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 February 2014.

American robins.

Arrived at Beech Hill with my dog early this sunny, crisp, still morning and encountered a bunch of birds. A flock of robins across the road dining on old fruit, the little poke-around birds—chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, brown creepers—poking around in the trees around the parking lot. A downy woodpecker across the road. My list had seven birds before we started up the snow-packed trail.

It was a really lovely morning up there. Bright, not too far below freezing, quiet enough to hear the croak of a raven and the distant caws of crows. After all, I have a thing about the corvidae.
