Loveliest season

White-breasted nuthatch.

Nippy this morning, but bright and full of promise. And, sure enough, the day warmed. I spent much of it moving boxes down flights of stairs and otherwise readying my building for changes—but by mid-afternoon, I had to get a bike ride in. Had a stout south wind but it was a nice fast ride.

Yellow-rumped warbler.

On our daily Beech Hill hike, Jack and I ran into many people and not a few dogs. I also counted a dozen bird species—most numerous, of course, being yellow-rumped warblers. But pileated woodpeckers were active (also at home), as were chickadees, nuthatches, a kinglet, the other resident birds. As for migrants, still a few towhees hanging around. At least two species of sparrow. And I can’t help but wonder if flickers will stick around all winter for the second straight year.

Winter. Now there’s a concept I hadn’t intended to bring up so early in this loveliest season.
