A much warmer morning. Didn’t bother with my winter coat. Not much wind. Overcast with a fine glow in the east above the bay.

Right away birds made their presences known. Many robins again, titmice and crows and chickadees. Kept looking at the lovely sky, being careful of ice yet underfoot. Woodpecker, goldfinch. nuthatch.

Returning from the woods, I spied a large flock of small birds headed for the summit spruce grove. Crossbills?

My camera confirmed the ID.

Warmer

Two robins, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 February 2023.
Two robins.

Yes, it was warmer this morning—much warmer. And by the time dog and I started our hike, warmer still. (And in afternoon, very much warmer.) Overcast, with a hazy sun occasionally, but warm, and only breezy.

As I kind of suspected would happen after so great a windblown chill, the birds came back. Had a dozen species today—including a Bald Eagle flyby, at which point my camera froze and didn’t save my photos (grr)—some of which posed. It was a comfortable hike, a good one. Even a great one.

Thankful I can do this daily, and for my daily companion. ??

Wind Chilly

Friday, February 3rd, 2023
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 February 2023.
Black-capped Chickadee.

We were ready for it, dog and me. I’d seen the forecast: semi-normal temps for the season to start, but they’d soon be plummeting. And accurate were those forecasts. It was 20° (F) out when I first checked, then 19°, then 18°—decided we should head out earlier than usual. Which we did.

And it was (as forecast) windy up there. Winds from the west, and gusting. I’d bundled up but still felt cold. Jack, meanwhile, didn’t seem the least miffed. Still, we hiked up the main trail in a hurry, through blowing snow.

After a quick warm-up in the hut, we continued down into the lee of the woods, and had a nice, comfortable time of it. Few birds (a robin down there), but no discomfort. Even back at the summit, the winds had died down a bit—temporarily. Turned out to be a lovely hike.

Now, tomorrow… We might have to wait until afternoon.

(Note: At 8 p.m. this evening, it’s –13° out, and gusty.)
