Coon Tracks

Raccoon tracks, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 February 2023.
Raccoon tracks.

Snowed maybe an inch overnight, much to my surprise. Was nice to see—and nice to walk on, seeing as how it took some of the slippery off the trails for dog and me.

Winter coat weather (sunny, but sub-freezing, with decent winds). Not a lot of bird species—and none at all would pose for me for a change (and I only saw two species all day)—but a lovable day, nonetheless. Lots of smells for Jack to inhale, and plenty of cool-looking landscapes for me to enjoy.

I did finally get a single bird photo: a crow in the yard. Not worthy of display here, so I share a photo of coon tracks instead.

We’ll do it again tomorrow!

Woodpecker

Friday, February 10th, 2023
Pileated Woodpecker (male), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 10 February 2023.
Pileated Woodpecker (male).

Rained pretty much all night, as forecast. I knew the landscape would be transformed this morning—and it was. Not in a bad way, but under overcast skies, up a foggy trail, in warmish temperatures, dog and I hiked alone. Heard a few birds, but what with the fog, I didn’t expect to get any good photos.

I was wrong.

Because as we wandered down through the trail’s woodland loop, I heard a distinctively slow tap, tap, tap of a particular woodpecker: a Pileated Woodpecker. Sure enough, I spotted the guy, took a few photos, and felt like I’d actually accomplished something.

Then coming back over the open trail, we came upon bluebirds and a yellow-rump or two. Ended up with ten species, much to my surprise.

Tomorrow the sun’s supposed to shine.

Bluebirds

Thursday, February 9th, 2023
Three bluebirds, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 February 2023,.
Three bluebirds.

A lovely, comfortable day today—sunny, calm, just about freezing. Had a bunch of birds coming up through the woods, imagining perhaps a batch of bluebirds at the summit. And sure enough there were some.

There were also several other nice species. (Heard a woodpecker drumming but could not be sure of the ID. Likely a hairy.)

Just a lovely day. After our hike, we did a bunch of errands. Including a visit to Loyal Biscuit—which warms the simmering cockles of Jack’s heart.
