“Peter, Peter, Peter”

Thursday, March 16th, 2017
Tufted Titmouse, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 March 2017.

Tufted Titmouse.

Like the chickadees and cardinals, the titmice have been singing their spring songs for weeks now. The “Peter, Peter, Peter” of one bird this a cold, bright, snowy morning reminded me that spring is only a few days away.

In the Wake

Wednesday, March 15th, 2017
Brown Creeper, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 March 2017.

Brown Creeper.

In the wake of the mid-March snow, whose crust grew hard from a period of drizzle, the birds emerged to: sing spring songs, glean food from trees, and scavenge what they can from humanity.

Northern Cardinal, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 March 2017.

The Day Before the Storm

Monday, March 13th, 2017
Common Raven, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2017.

Common Raven.

The day before the storm
A pair of ravens flew
One at a time across the sky,
Each muttering magic calls
Of “glug” and “cluck” and “cu.”

White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2017.

White-breasted Nuthatch.

Before tomorrow’s storm
A Northern Cardinal sang,
As did a Black-capped Chickadee
And a Brown-headed Cowbird—
First cowbird of the year.

Before new snow piles up
My dog Jack and I hiked
Among ten hopeful bird species,
Singing, anticipating
The coming equinox.
