Distant islands

Mount Desert Island, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 26 December 2011.

Mount Desert Island.

I had to google “Boxing Day.” For whatever reason it’s called that, this one was gorgeous. Sunny, melty, fresh-seeming, even briefly warm in the briefly high sun. Crows about, and chickadees, and a titmouse. I shoveled the Christmas snow, and the sun took care of the thin remnant layer of ice on the deck and walkways. At one point I moved my pickup, and as soon as a started it, a small brown bird flitted away from somewhere underneath the vehicle, looked like. (I suppose it might’ve just at that moment flitted up from somewhere else, traveling low.) It was a sort of bronze-brown color with white wing bars. That’s all I got.

Afternoon sun.

But I did get a few resident species at Beech Hill with Jack, where we met a number of other hikers and saw the paw prints of dogs dashing all over the fields. (Seems a lot of people simply ignore the keep-your-dog-on-a-leash sign.) Brilliant sun, bright landscape, distant islands.

White Christmas

Berries, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 25 December 2011.

Berries.

For the first time in as far back as I can remember, it snowed on Christmas Day. Pretty much all day, in fact. A nearly perfect snow, too—soft, fluffy, not too much, but enough to have to sweep, shovel, and plow. Plenty of hikers at Beech Hill, too, which was nice, if unexpected. Even few birds up there, as well.

Peace to you all.

Sun, cold, stars

Mount Desert, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 24 December 2011.

Mount Desert.

What a sunny day, what a cold day. Way colder than yesterday. My temperature gauges aren’t working well at the moment, but I’d guess the high might’ve reached 20 degrees (F), and with a lick of breeze. In mid-afternoon, I convinced the daughter to hike Beech Hill with Jack and me. It might’ve been the warmest part of the day, but there’s usually a good wind blowing up on an open hill, and today was no exception. In short, we ended up with brain freeze, pretty much. But we also ended up seeing a tight-knit raft of coots at Chickawaukie lake, a pair of flickers down the eastern slope, and a gaggle of chickadees down at the parking lot. (I also happened to notice a pair of herring gulls down near Route 1.)

Tonight—well, what do you expect when the sun goes down? Cold. Wintry, star-spangled. I love a dark Maine night sky.
