Lone Robin

Had a few urgent tasks to take care of this morning, so Jack and I didn’t arrive at the trailhead until quite late. Clear skies early had given way to a light overcast, and there were few birds about, making it kind of quiet up the mountainside—other than chickadees and magpies.

But toward the end of the hike we walked around to an overlook of the neighborhood, where right away I heard a junco and a Song Sparrow and saw a scrub-jay.

Turns out my earliest sighting was one of the best: a lone, calling robin on a utility line.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m., I hiked a few hundred feet up the mountain.
