One of my favorite aspects of Beech Hill is that Savannah Sparrows like to nest there. Every year I see them flitting about in the grass, hear their lovely, sibilant songs (among my favorite bird songs), and watch as they scold my dog and me as we walk by on the trail.
This morning I heard the distinctive, sharp chip! of a Savannah, and there it was, standing on a stone in the middle of a blueberry field, not twenty feet from us, with the equivalent of its hackles raised.
For sure a favorite bird.
