I Wish I Could Speak Crow

Tuesday, March 21st, 2017
American Robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 March 2017.

American Robin.

“Caw, caw, caw,” the crow says,
then, “Caw, caw.”

American Crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 March 2017.

American Crow.

Sometimes the caws are five—
almost as often as three—
but many times they four times,
except in the sequence of five,
but missing the middle caw.

Sometimes crows band together
and holler all at once at a hawk or owl
or raven, or fox.

Sometimes they caw seven times.

I wish I could speak crow.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
