Common Raven (juvenile).
The sun and warmth of early summer
proved too tempting, so
I took an hour in afternoon
to go out cycling.
In the Route 1 shoulder, I came upon
the husk of a dead robin,
no doubt the victim of a car-strike.
And soon after, I rode between
a freshly road-killed squirrel
and a fearless crow that had stood
moments before on the white shoulder line
as cars streamed past
but flapped away at my approach
on a mere two wheels. Within an hour
I was at Beech Hill with my dog watching
young ravens out testing their wings.
