Late in the day this time of year, the air grows cool and sweet, carrying smells from inland and upcountry, from all the way up in Canada sometimes, and on clear or partly cloudy days, there’s colorful, angular light.
And the light illuminates the wooded slopes, the deep greens of the conifers and the rising yellows and reds of the hardwoods.
And from the summit of Beech Hill, looking east with the light behind you, if the air is still, the water of the bay spreads away in stripes of dark and light water, circling islands, clear out to Mount Desert Island.
