“Merry Christmas, meadow voles.” —Northern Shrike

Cold morning. Breezy. Bright sun. Crow and chickadee. And near the summit, a glimpse of a Northern Shrike.

(Elsewhere, a bunch of birds—including a gaggle turkeys fluttering across Route 1.)

C-c-cold Bluebirds

Backlit bluebird, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 December 2018.

Backlit bluebird.

Lovely, bright, nippy early morning on the hill. Came upon a little gaggle of Eastern Bluebirds down in the sunny lee (where I’ve come upon them before). They were backlit, though.

In-Town Birds

Saturday, December 8th, 2018
Pileated Woodpecker, Rockport, Maine, 08 December 2018.

Pileated Woodpecker (male).

Got to the hill early this nippy morning. Temps of about 10 or 12 degrees (F) when first I looked, but mostly cloudless and only a slight breeze. Alas, there was early mowing going on up there, and the only birds I got a look at were in a distant flock of redpolls.

However, quite a few birds were poking about in and around town: a robin out back, finches and a nuthatch and a chickadee out front, even a pileated woodpecker plucking cherries from a tree along rushing Route 1.

The food’s just where you can find it, I guess.
