Abundance

Yellow-rumped Warbler (with bayberry).

Yellow-rumped Warblers have got to be one of the ten most abundant bird species in North America. Another large flock moved through this morning at Beech Hill—a colder, windier morning than yesterday. Maybe that’s why I caught them today ravaging a great patch of bayberries (also abundant in these parts), plucking off the berries one by one and literally tossing them down.

Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Also heard (then saw) a raven. My fingers liked to froze in the wind, though.

Portrait of Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Got cold overnight. And windy. But over in the sun-warmed eastern lee of Beech Hill, Jack and I encountered a party of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Stood there for about fifteen minutes, I’d guess, just watching and taking photos.

A nice morning, a good day.

Portrait of Vireo

Sunday, October 23rd, 2016
Red-eyed Vireo, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 23 October 2016.

Red-eyed Vireo.

Cold front moved through last night. Wind a-blowin’. Dressed Jack in his blaze orange jacket, what with some early hunting going on. Me, I liked to froze my fingers.

Not many birds were out—or at least none that I saw (or could hear above the wind). Did get a look at a solitary Herring Gull, glimpsed of a few yellow-rumps and chickadees.

Then, just as we were about to arrive back at the parking lot, I came face to face with a young Red-Eyed Vireo.
