West wind

Alder cones.

Raw and rainy. Big desk-work day. Early afternoon hike with Jack. Mud all over the place—and a cold west wind.

Too warm

Saturday, December 27th, 2014
Clouds, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 December 2014.

Clouds.

This lovely morning my dog and I took a hike up Beech Hill. Warm, fair, mild, still, colorful, sunny, pleasant, even fragrant. And a bit unsettling. Because, after all, it’s the end of December.

American Goldfinches, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 December 2014.

American Goldfinches.

Not that I’m complaining. In a way I suppose I’m a contrarian: I see the imperfections in a perfect-seeming thing, and I see the beauty in discomfort. Maybe that’s a sign of having lived on the planet a while, I don’t know.

I did see some happy goldfinches and heard the note of a White-throated Sparrow.

Lost day

Friday, December 26th, 2014
Birch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 26 December 2014.

Birch.

The days, while lengthening, are short yet. Their photoperiods, I mean. Today I got to work a few minutes late—and didn’t leave until nearly sunset. A busy one. And then an evening hike with Jack.

Bunch of people on the hill again, it being Boxing Day, and a Friday. Heard a couple of birds is all.

Still warm for the season. That will change.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 4 p.m., I hiked the open trail.
