Lovely

American robin, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 22 February 2013.

American robin.

Warmer today. Sunny. Hardly any wind. Got busy making e-books and so didn’t get out in it until kind of late, but, man, was it lovely out. Fresh air to inhale, crunchy Beech Hill trail to hike with Jack. Got good looks at chickadees and robins—common birds, but lovely.

Crunchy snow

Birch, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 21 February 2013.

Birch.

Pickup in the shop again today. Fixed this time. Finally. (Water in some wires.) But this pushed back my hike with Jack until late in the day—when it was cold and breezy and getting dark fast at Beech Hill.

Heard chickadees, though, just as we started up. Otherwise, just a lot of really crunchy snow and a pretty good wind up there. Might’ve been the quickest hike I’ve had since summer, in fact. But here’s a cool fact: tomorrow’s always a different kind of day.

Robins

American robin, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 20 February 2013.

American robin.

Our friend Kristen accompanied me and Jack on our Beech Hill hike this afternoon—a nippy, breezy, overcast afternoon. The hill was a riot of robins.

American crow, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 20 February 2013.

American crow.

We spotted a large batch of ’em as we neared the parking lot. Then we spotted a larger batch down by the sumac on the southern slope. Then we watched that batch merge with another and travel westward, then northward across the trail behind us to dine on something in bare patches of field. We also spotted a mess of flickers (at least five, by Kristen’s count—I had lent her my binocs, since she’d left hers in her car), a red-tail, a solitary gull, and maybe a half-dozen crows.

Returning from the summit, we encountered the robins again, sailing over and moving ahead of us down the trail. There must’ve been at least fifty of ’em up there this afternoon, all told.
