Sun-day

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012
Brown creeper, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 22 January 2012.

Brown creeper.

A cold, white, bright-sun Sunday. About midday, I took two dogs with me to Beech Hill, where we encountered a few other humans, a few other dogs, and an impressive array of local birds. Crow and flicker calling, and a number of species flitting about in the trees near the parking lot, taking advantage of the warmth of the sun. Without it, it sure wasn’t very warm.

Wintry day

Saturday, January 21st, 2012
Slope, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 21 January 2012.

Slope.

Ten degrees (F) early, fifteen degrees late. Light snow, little wind. Not many birds around—neither here at my place or at Beech Hill. However, I did catch sight of a little flock of robins down the snowy eastern hillside. And heard a bunch of chickadees at the parking lot.

Stalks, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 21 January 2012.

Stalks.

The snow moved away late, and tonight the sky is clear. Northern lights are a possibility, or so they say. Considering the chill, though, I’m not liable to see ’em.

The sound of ice falling

Friday, January 20th, 2012
Weeds, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 20 January 2012.

Weeds.

Snowed overnight. Maybe four inches. But the sun came out early, and—despite sub-freezing temperatures—the melting began. I heard a goldfinch out there while shoveling snow.

Synchronized hiking, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 20 January 2012.

Synchronized hiking.

My Beech Hill hike with two dogs was fun, if somewhat slippery, with all that fluffy snow overspreading the ice of recent days. Saw a flicker down the eastern slope. Fresh air, good exercise. I wonder if I’ll ever get to don my snowshoes this winter. Sure haven’t needed them so far.

Tonight I watched Venus set behind the oaks out back. And listened to ice falling from the oaks themselves.

Beech Hill List

2. American goldfinch
3. American crow
