Just a hike

Sunday, November 27th, 2011
Beech Nut, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 27 November 2011.

Beech Nut.

Another mild day today, but with clouds and moisture in the air. Worked most of the day, then hiked with dog. It was a quick hike. Mucky underfoot. Chickadees and kinglets in the trees. Hazy gray views. Pulse high, breathing, fast pace, east wind. It’s a thing we do every day, dog and I—and love to do.

Just a hike.

Monhegan from a distance

Saturday, November 26th, 2011
Monhegan, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 26 November 2011.

Monhegan.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Monhegan lately. It’s a long story (literally), but for a couple weeks my mind’s been wandering back to the several trips I’ve taken there over the past few years. It’s a 4.5-square-mile island with a long history, its own myths and legends, an allure to visual artists, and lots of unlikely birds. I last visited only seven or eight weeks ago, but I’m already looking forward to returning.

During my Beech hill hike with Jack today, I got a nice look at Monhegan floating in the pale orange light of a late-November sunset. Also got a look at a lone kayaker down at Chickawaukie Lake. Also a crow, a jay, and a distant gull.

Earlier on this mild, calm day, in town, the aliens were flocking: European starlings and house sparrows.

And tonight—still mild, now clear—my mind’s still out on the island.

Late bluebirds

Eastern bluebird, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 25 November 2011.

Eastern bluebird.

Note: In the wee hours, before I hit the sack last night, I heard the voices of Canada geese coming from somewhere. In flight? At Clam Cove? I tend to think they were flying. Anyway, I note this in case you’re wondering about the species appearance on today’s list.

Beech Nut.

This one was a nice one. A blue-sky day, mild temperatures, crows flapping around, gulls soaring, pigeons flying above the town. I spotted the pigeons while doing errands with Jack in mid-afternoon, just before our trip to Beech Hill, where the snow on the trail had gone slushy. Met a few groups of fellow hikers and one familiar dog. Also met a fresh snowman up at Beech Nut. And, just below the summit, three bluebirds.

The bluebirds were a surprise. Seems kind of late for them still to be moving through. I didn’t get a great look, but there were at least one male and one female—possible another male. They perched on the bare tips of low bushes, occasionally dipping down to the ground for some kind of grub. When they finally flew, calling softly, they flew in a southerly direction.

Otherwise, I heard crows and chickadees up there. That’s all.

Tonight we’ve got a sky as clear as crystal. The off-season constellations are high. And the dark solstice is just four weeks away.
