After a long day of desk work, gazing out at the sun, I finally wrapped things up, grabbed dog, and headed for Beech Hill. We found the landscape bright and cold—and swarming with eastern bluebirds.
Well, maybe not swarming, exactly, but I spotted at least six or eight of them down the southern slope, flitting among low perches, scanning the warming hillside for something to eat. It’s been a bluebirdy winter—I’ve seen them in December, January, February. More than I’ve seen in several years hiking the hill, in fact.
Heard chickadees and a nuthatch. Saw a flicker. But it was bluebird city up there today.
And back home, I noticed daffodils sprouting through the old snow.
