Hawk

Red-tailed Hawk, Chickawaukie Lake, Rockland, Maine, 07 March 2014.

Red-tailed Hawk.

A good, busy, sunny, warmish day. You could sort of feel a thaw in the air—antic air though it was, with a good, stout breeze. After a couple of frigid nights, it felt almost spring-like. I worked a bunch, visited a couple times with the neighbors’ good dogs, then took Jack up to Beech Hill in early afternoon.

Pussy willow.

Ravens up there again, the same resident pair. Also crows again. And wheeling gulls. Pretty much the same bird species as yesterday. But also somewhat thawing ice, a waxing moon rising, pussy willows budding. Nobody else up there but me and dog.

Then, returning along Route 17 along Chickawaukie Lake, I saw a large bird perched in a tree in an upright posture near the turn-off—so I turned off. It turned out to be a young Red-Tailed Hawk.
