Thaw

December 15th, 2022
Tufted Titmouse, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 December 2022.
Tufted Titmouse.

I don’t believe the temperature dipped below freezing last night, which would explain the diminished ice along the trails this morning. Temps in the upper-30s (F), a gusty wind, partly cloudy skies (which clouded over later). Encountered more bird species than yesterday (not hard to do), although I only saw two.

Good hike, though. Beautiful moody light on the bay.

Tomorrow, we’re supposed to get a little dose of cross-continent Winter Storm Diaz. Later in the day, I think (perhaps extending into Saturday), with the first inches of snow possible.

Should be calmer for Sunday’s Christmas Bird Count, though. Looking forward to that.

The Wind, the Wind

December 14th, 2022
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 14 December 2022.
Black-capped Chickadee.

Awoke this morning to the road of high winds in the dim dawn light. Temps about freezing—but the wind, the wind. Could not imagine encountering many birds. If any.

But dog and I did encounter a few chickadees toward the summit. And on the way back down, I spotted a flicker in flight.

Crow, gull, and turkeys in town. Precipitation forecast for tomorrow.

Fun Hike

December 13th, 2022
Yellow-rumped Warbler (on bluebird box), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 December 2022.
Yellow-rumped Warbler (on bluebird box).

A morning similar to yesterday’s—low 20s (F), light winds—but nearly cloudless skies. Had few birds to start, but they started showing up eventually.

Most notable was a Ruffed Grouse we flushed, dog and me, as we ascended the upper wooded trail. But I suspected the blue sky and light wind would mean bluebirds (which it did) and yellow-rumps (also did). Two nuthatch species, chickadees and titmice.

All in all a fun hike with my ol’ dog (and best friend) Captain Jack.
