A winter’s day

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016
Bohemian Waxwing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 February 2016.

Bohemian Waxwing.

Snowed into the night last night, and this morning’s light revealed maybe a fresh five inches. Everything smoothed over, cleaned up, evened out. Cold—teens early, reaching the 20s (F)—but not too windy. The sun peeked in and out all day.

Oak.

Took a midday hike with Jack. Took snowshoes but didn’t wear ’em. Nobody else on the hill when we got there about 12:30. Nice hike. Lovely light. No birds, though—until we got nearly all the way back to the parking lot, when I noticed a flock of waxwings in a crabapple tree across the road. Two dozen maybe. Stood there taking photos while waiting for the sun to emerge from the clouds. Waited about ten or fifteen minutes. No luck. Moved on.

Spent more time at my desk in afternoon. Got quite a bit done. Sun went down. Watched a little TV.

Tomorrow is another winter’s day.

Winter wind

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016
Beech Nut, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 19 January 2016.

Beech Nut.

Eight degrees (F) when first I looked. Windy—I mean, really, really windy. When it came time to hike Beech Hill, I brought a bunch of warm stuff.

Astonishingly, another guy was just returning from a hike when we arrived in mid-afternoon, dog and I. He’d come with some sort of outer suit on—including a sort of head jacket or something. (I don’t know about these things.) Had a lot of stuff to take off before he could drive away. I just had a hoodie and a heavy coat, with a scarf wrapped around my face.

Was probably about twelve degrees when we got there, and it blew. But Jack was great. Took the GoPro again. Still working on the best way to film stuff. We shall see.

Did not expect any birds today—but three crows flew by as we were descending.

This note: en route to the hill, I caught sight of a small flock of waxwings dining on the fruit of some ornamental roadside trees in Rockport Village. Bohemians, I’m pretty sure.

Pleasant day

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015
American Robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 February 2015.

American Robin.

Kind of a balmy day. Kind of a balmy, birdy day. Right away I heard the voices of a couple species that’d been silent for weeks—cardinal and jay—and during my Beech Hill hike with dog, I saw a little collection of Bohemian Waxwings.

Dreamlike frosting, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 February 2015.

Dreamlike frosting.

Also saw three Yellow-Rumped Warblers up there, and those Canadian robins are still abundant.

That last snow that blew in from, seemingly, the southwest caused some interesting frosty effects on natural and artificial objects alike.

I helped push a van out of a slippery spot.

All in all a pretty pleasant day.
