Return of the coots

Thursday, November 15th, 2012
Sunset from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 15 November 2012.

Sunset.

A busy ol’ day, with weather much like yesterday’s, albeit with perhaps a few more veils of clouds. An active desk day, an active errand day, and brisk late hike with dog.

We did meet a couple other Beech Hill hikers despite the late hour. Most notable, bird-wise, was the small raft of coots floating in Chickawaukie Lake when we drove by—floating in the same spot they occupied until ice-over last year. When I hadn’t seen or heard a single bird on the way up the trail, I wondered if I’d be able to spot the coots from the hill and thus have at least one bird on today’s list. Then I heard a couple jays calling from the trees down the slope.

Nothing at the summit except a painterly sunset sky. On our way back down, I stopped and scanned the lake through my binoculars. Sure enough, coots. Bird No. 2.

And chickadees at the parking lot made three.

Sun and moon

Thursday, January 5th, 2012
Sunset, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 05 January 2012.

Sunset.

A run-around day. May pigeons wheeling around town. A little cluster of Bonaparte’s gulls at Clam Cove. Not a lot of time to hike at the end of it for Jack and me—but it was a nice one. Nippy, fresh air. Chickawaukie Lake is about frozen over finally, but in a little river of open water, I spied the raft of coots.

Moon over Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 05 January 2012.

Moon.

Mostly, though, I admired the setting sun and the rising moon.

Crows in the dooryard

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012
Beech Nut, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 04 January 2012.

Beech Nut.

Cold day. Busy day. Crows in the dooryard. Got out kind of late.

No one at breezy Beech Hill but dog and me. Tight bunch of coots at the late—now with a partly frozen surface. Nearing the summit, I caught sight of a harrier sailing low over the opposite slope. We snuck on up, peered over the rise. Nothing. The bird must have seen us and moved away.

Sundown, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 04 January 2012.

Sundown.

Heard the wing-beats of a mourning dove back at the parking lot, then saw one of the birds on the drive back home.

A cold night. Clouds have overshot this patch of planet. You can sort of see where the moon is by the fuzzy white light above the oak trees.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 3:30 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

1. American coot
2. Northern harrier
3. Mourning dove (wing whistle)

4. American crow
5. House sparrow
