December Wind

December 9th, 2022

Downy Woodpecker.

Clear and colder this morning, as forecast, and windier than I anticipated. Spent a few minutes deciding how warm to wrap up, decided on the usual warm hoodie with a scarf. Thanks to the ever-present eye of the sun, it was a good decision. (My winter coat would’ve been too warm.)

Not many birds, thanks (mostly) to the wind (gusting to 20 miles and hour or more), but a few nice species. A couple even posed for pics.

Clear, Warmish, Windy

December 8th, 2022
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 December 2022.
Black-capped Chickadee.

Clear skies this morning, along with warm temperatures—upper 40s (F)—and a pretty good gusty west-northwest wind. Many more birds than during yesterday’s rainy hike, but none would pose for photos.

That is, until we’d just about finished our hike, dog and me, when a chickadee showed up in a tree above my head, wrangling a brunch of seeds.

Quite a few birds at home, too—turkeys, jays (first in a while), gull.

Tonight will be colder (i.e., more seasonable), which should make it an interesting Friday morning hike.

A Rainy Day

December 7th, 2022
American Crow on a rainy morn, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 December 2022.
American Crow on a rainy morn.

The forecast was for rain all day, and guess what? It rained all day. When Captain Jack and I hit the trail (a bit later than usual), it was a light rain, but wet we got nonetheless.

Birds were few, species fewer. Saw a couple chickadees and a random Yellow-rumped Warbler, but no bird close to photographable. That is, until we’d almost made our way back to the trailhead, when a crow flew over.

Thanks, crow.
