Woodhouse’s Scrub-jay.

Dawn revealed an even gray overcast, sub-freezing temperatures, and a faint dusting of snow. By late morning, the sky hadn’t changed, and the temperature hadn’t risen much. And we hiked, dog and I.

A few birds, a few deer. Most memorable moment was trying like crazy to focus on a scrub-jay perched on a utility line. Finally managed.

And the calendar year winds down.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
