On this chilly, overcast morning
I caught sight of a distant bird
flapping right to left out toward the bay,
and I drew out my binocs and found what
at first I thought a Herring Gull.
But then I saw that the backs of its wings—
the wings of this large bird
flapping in the distance—
were black, and I thought,
No, it’s a Great Black-backed Gull.
But then I saw that the bird itself
was too large-headed,
and too long-winged,
and just too large,
and I knew.
It was an Bald Eagle.
