Up with the sun this chilly morning. Just below freezing first thing, which made the muddy Beech hill trail less of a challenge on the way up through the woods (although on the way down things had warmed sufficiently that it was its usual April muck). Not as many birds about, perhaps because of the lower temperature, but I did hear dueling cardinals and song sparrows (at the summit, mere yards apart) and saw a young eagle fly over not very high.
Returning through the woods, I heard a pair of birds flying north fairly high above us calling to each other from maybe a hundred yards apart. Their calls sounded like Ow! (Long pause.) Ow! I have no idea what they were—some kind of gull or duck?
Tonight we have a hazy moon. Some precipitation due tomorrow. Certainly, however, I sense a warming trend.
