Red-tail, blue sky

Red-tailed hawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 December 2013.

Red-tailed hawk.

Cold and achingly clear today. I shoveled the rest of the walkways, etc., and got a lot of work done. Then went with dog to Beech Hill.

Tiny tracks, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 December 2013.

Tiny tracks.

Someone—perhaps two people—had tramped down my snowshoe tracks from yesterday, making today’s hike a lot easier. Nobody else hiking while we were up there, but I did hear chickadees, did see a flicker (and heard another), and came upon a handsome adult red-tail hovering above the southern slope in the achingly brisk wind. Liked to froze my fingers off working to get a decent photo.

Back in the parking lot, I heard the chips of a yellow-rumped warbler. Must’ve been one cold little mofo.
