Late hike

Wednesday, February 17th, 2016
Brown Creeper, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockoprt, Maine, 17 February 2016.

Brown Creeper.

Spent all day at my desk, feeling like a chest cold is coming along. Sunny and 30s (F), a fast-moving stream out back. Major thaw over the past day or two.

Big thaw, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockoprt, Maine, 17 February 2016.

Big thaw.

Beech Hill was muddy, watery, and nearly completely devoid of snow. Quite a few little birds galavanting around, including a pair of Brown Creepers.

Not feeling great tonight. Early bedtime for me. Jack, on the other hand, seems great. (Early bedtime for him, too.)

Wet, windy

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016
Birch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 February 2016.

Wet.

As promised, the rain came. Was raining when I rose—not hard, but steady—and temperature were hovering in the 40s (F). Snow had gone slushy already. Heard jays out there. And crows.

Windy, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 February 2016.

Windy.

Got busy doing desk work and didn’t make it out until kind of late. More daylight to work with, but still. Wasn’t exactly eager to get all wet and slushy. But that’s just what we did, me and dog. I brought snowshoes, but so much snow had melted, I decided I wouldn’t need them. And I didn’t need them. But I sure could’ve used them on a couple or three stretches of trail—stretches where deep drifts had gone soft, and my feet broke through the slush into liquid water, and my jeans legs got soaked.

At least it wasn’t cold.

But it sure was windy. I’m talking 40-mile-an-hour winds from the southeast. A couple small patches of heavy rain passed over, and the wind-whipped rain stung my face. Kept to the trail edges, where the wet snow was shallow, and got my boot hung up in the twine between the posts. Nearly toppled over but somehow caught myself.

Jack was amused.

Tonight it’s still wet and drippy out. Will be interesting to see what the world looks like in the light of day tomorrow.

Winter cold

Monday, February 15th, 2016
Traces, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 February 2016.

Traces.

Very cold last night—below-zero (F) cold. But when I first checked, the temperature had risen to 4. And it continued to rise all day, as the bright early sun gave way to a luminous gray overcast. Little birds in the back yard, the flock of House Sparrows in downtown Camden, the flock of pigeons in Rockport Village.

Layers, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 February 2016.

Layers.

My Beech Hill hike with Jack was a bit frigid, but without yesterday’s outlandish wind chill. Encountered (and passed) only one little family attempting the climb—but apparently turning back, as we never saw them again.

On our way back home, I happened to see a Sharp-shinned Hawk flutter over into a yard where apparently was a feeder. Two doves came zipping out of the trees and crossed the road.

Supposed to get warm and rain tomorrow.
