Rain and fog

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015
A walk in the rain, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 December 2015.

A walk in the rain.

Rainy day. Snow in some places up north, I hear, but at 40-something degrees (F), just rain here. Desk work, then rainy hike with Jack.

Not hard rain, though. And somehow I actually saw three species in today’s rain and fog.

Strange winter

Monday, December 21st, 2015
Takin’ a hike, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 December 2015.

Takin’ a hike.

Warmer today—a day that began sunny but turned overcast by the time Jack and I managed to hike Beech Hill. Got a load of work done before then, as well as listed most of today’s birds.

Fae habitat, Near Mount Battie, Camden, Maine, 21 December 2015.

Fae habitat.

Heard a single yellow-rump and a solitary woodpecker during our hike. Nice hike. Still unseasonably balmy thought.

And today—being the solstice—brings us to winter.

Difference in a day

Sunday, December 20th, 2015
Limned, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 December 2015.

Limned.

What a difference a day makes: from dozens of species to two. But it was a colder one, and a windier one, and wind probably drowned out the voices of birds in the short time I spent outside.

Ornament, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 December 2015.

Ornament.

Spent only about forty-five minutes out in it, in fact—Beech Hill hike late in the day. Heard only chickadees. But I saw backlit weeds in the setting sun, and a rising moon perched in a tree.

The wind died down as night fell. Early. Tomorrow being the solstice and all.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 3:15 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

1. Black-capped Chickadee

2. Mourning Dove
