Plenty of birds

Monday, February 25th, 2013
Afternoon, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 25 February 2013.

Afternoon.

Sunny and warm today. Also snow-covered. Went out and shoveled for about an hour, ended up with a pretty good sweat. Worked inside for the rest of it—until late, when dog and I took a nice hike.

Birch, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 25 February 2013.

Birch.

No birds at Beech Hill today, but we did meet two small runaway dogs on the trail. (I know where they belong, and they seemed to be headed home in a hurry.) Some nice clouds up there, nice light. Also very, very still. You could stand at the summit and listen and hear distant whispers—but no bird calls.

Plenty of birds elsewhere, though.

Curling

Sunday, February 24th, 2013
Beech Nut, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 24 February 2012.

Beech Nut.

Snowed all day, from dawn to dusk. A pretty good, thick snow, but without a whole lot of wind. Still, it whitened everything and kept the birds hunkered down, pretty much (as evidenced by my Beech Hill list). Still, it was a milestone day: I went curling for the first time.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 3:45 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

(No birds seen or heard on the hill today.)

Wintry trail.

Busy day. Fairly mild. Overcast. Breezy. A little storm headed this way. Robins at Beech Hill. Also chickadees and the voice of a crow. And this afternoon Jack and I met other Beech Hill hikers (a little family) for the first time all week. He’s a friendly dog.
