Birch.

Well, it’s moved into my head. A lot of sniffling and sneezing. But still I hiked Beech Hill with dog. Saw a few birds up there. Here’s another picture of a birch tree.

Remnant color, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 15 December 2012.

Remnant color.

Cold has moved into my chest big-time, but I suppose I’ll survive. Did some errands with Jack today and then on our way to Beech Hill I passed a tiny pond that sometimes has mallards. No ducks today: the pond was all froze up.

It's warmest in the sun, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 15 December 2012.

It's warmest in the sun..

Pretty nippy on the hill, as well, but it didn’t deter a few hikers. Nor did it slow me or Jack down much at all. Right off the bat, I had four species—crow, chickadee, nuthatch, titmouse—and up the hill a ways I heard a flicker. Distant coots and herring gulls rounded out the list today. (Jack paused at Beech Nut to bask for a moment in the sun.)

Took dog out a minute ago for his late-night pee, and I heard the honk of a Canada goose above us.

Birch.

Chest cold. Lovely day. Sunlight angling through the south windows as solstice nears. Hike with dog. Beech Hill air cool and sweet. A pair of robins passing through. Clouds caught in a birch tree.
