Winter’s Dance

Friday, February 17th, 2017
Wild Turkey, Rockport, Maine, 17 February 2017.

Wild Turkey.

This morning when I first glance
out the window over the kitchen sink
I see two turkeys pecking and pacing
up the drive,
each with healthy-looking beard tufts,
each puffed up against the chill.

Northern Cardinal, Rockport, Maine, 17 February 2017.

Northern Cardinal.

Not long after, on the hill,
few birds can manage to raise their voices
above the insistent rush of the wind,
that blows snow
around our ankles, Jack and I,
as if asking us to dance.

Before the Snow

American Robin.

Hit the hill early enough
To see an orange horizon
In the east, before the snow
That finally came
And would not go.
