Evening hike

Pink horizon, from Beech HIll, Rockport, Maine, 02 December 2011.

Pink horizon.

Didn’t get out until later than I thought. Either that, or it got dark earlier than I thought. Probably both. After some quick errands, dog and I hit the quickly dimming hill, where we were alone—except for a white-breasted nuthatch whose faint voice I barely heard.

Cool day, cool evening. Not much breeze. Mostly overcast, but with a faint bright line along the southern horizon. Too dark for photos, really, but oh, well.

Pretty sure we hiked up and down faster than we have in a while. I listened for owls but heard none.

And now, tonight, the sky has cleared and the moon has set behind the bare oaks and Orion has risen, and Sirius. Sometimes I wonder if Sirius is really the eye of God, watching us. Or the place where all souls go.

Probably it’s just a really nice, bright star.
