4° Thanksgiving

Eye of the chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 November 2018.

Eye of the chickadee.

I knew it’d be a cold Thanksgiving Day, but when I saw 4 degrees (F) on the thermometer first thing, I shivered a little. Because with the cold came a high wind. But dog and I are dauntless when it comes to our daily hike.

First bird on the sunny hill was a solitary Snow Bunting I heard, then spotted flying away from us. Second bird was a chickadee that down in a wooded lee. Had a few back yard birds also—none would pose long enough for photos, though. Still I’m mostly thankful just to live on the same planet with them all.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
