“FEE-bee!”

“FEE-bee!” —Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 March 2018.

Black-capped Chickadee.

A clear and snow-covered and windy morning, with a lumpy trail to climb. Jack and I enjoyed the brisk walk, though, which was punctuated by the distinctive two-note spring songs of chickadees. Two sang dueling songs near the gate—the first a whole step higher then the latter, and their two-note songs also (as usual) descended full step. Someday I’ll write a symphony that begins that way.

Another sure sign of spring.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
