Not-so-forced March

Thursday, December 21st, 2017

Cold crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 December 2017.

Cold crow.

The morning of the winter solstice, the temperature was 16 degrees (F). The winds were blowing strong out of the west. Jack and I embarked on a forced march up Beech Hill.

OK, so it wasn’t a forced forced March. We chose to go. That is, I chose to go—Jack doesn’t exactly choose to go, he just goes, because he loves to go. He lives to go. It also wasn’t forced in that it was pretty interesting, really. I didn’t think I’d have any birds on my list, but I had five—and four of these I saw.

New moon, Rockport, Maine, 21 December 2017.

New moon.

And tonight, we had a new crescent moon.
