Some days, decent photos are hard to come by in my quick Beech Hill hike with dog. Some off-season days birds are hard to come by. So I just breathe and walk and pay attention and hope for the best. Today—after an overnight snow and with a nip in the air—proved, right away, rather fortunate.
No other hikers there today when we showed up. I heard chickadees as we left the parking lot and proceeded up through the young trees. Among them I heard a Golden-crowned Kinglet. Kinglets of any stripe are swift and antic and really hard to take photos of, but this one got near, flitting from twig to twig, then stopped for a second or two just as I’d managed to focus.
Bingo.
Also saw a circling red-tail and heard a robin and jay—and all around a truly incredible sky.
