Warbler and whip-poor-will

Sunday, August 18th, 2013
Chestnut-sided warbler (juvenile), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 17 August 2013.

Chestnut-sided warbler (juvenile).

This lovely day developed a hazy overcast by the end of it. Still lovely, though. I worked at the kitchen table, grocery shopped, returned to work at the kitchen table some more. Then Jack and I took our daily hike.

Very quiet up there this early evening. Right away, however, I managed to sneak up on a little chestnut-sided warbler family, including two or three youngsters. They were foraging not eight or ten feet from us. We just stood there silently, as I tried for photos. Nothing spectacular, alas, but at least you can see what one looked like.

Not much else up there except a few people a dog, and nice view, and the croak of a raven.

Incidentally, I had a report from my friend Mark that he’d taken a late visit Beech Hill yesterday—right around sunset—and both saw and heard a whip-poor-will fluttering around down by the road. Big news, to me: a couple-three decades ago, the species was quite common hereabouts, but I’ve only heard one in a least a dozen years.
