Red Crossbill, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 December 2022.
Red Crossbill.

Was supposed to be cloudy and gusty this morning, with rain coming about midday. And, sure enough, the day dawned with a thick overcast. However, when dog and I got to the trail, there was a mist in the air—part snow.

Not a lot of snow, mind you (that’ll possibly come tomorrow), but enough to whiten things. I didn’t expect to encounter many bird species—maybe even get no photos.

Imagine my pleasant surprise when a little flock of crossbills landed in the spruce grove at the summit about the same time we did.

Tomorrow should be exciting.

December Wind

Downy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 December 2022.
Downy Woodpecker.

Clear and colder this morning, as forecast, and windier than I anticipated. Spent a few minutes deciding how warm to wrap up, decided on the usual warm hoodie with a scarf. Thanks to the ever-present eye of the sun, it was a good decision. (My winter coat would’ve been too warm.)

Not many birds, thanks (mostly) to the wind (gusting to 20 miles and hour or more), but a few nice species. A couple even posed for pics.

Glimpse of Tufted Titmouse, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 December 2022.
Glimpse of Tufted Titmouse.

Overcast to start but with flashes of sun. A lovely sky above the bay, temperatures in the 40s (F), a bit of a breeze. Birds were about, but I only saw three of the eight species I counted. None really posed for photos—but I happened to grab a distant pic of a titmouse.

Supposed to rain all day tomorrow.
