Moody

Crow on the wing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 January 2023.
Crow on the wing.

A nippy morning that started off sunny but soon turned overcast. Did not see that coming—but I’m glad it happened, because the scenery grew moody and the sky aglow. Few birds, but it didn’t really matter.

Most noteworthy, in fact, might’ve been the crows that I heard cawing in the periphery. One took off and flew out toward the bay.

Finally Winter

Northern Flicker.
The bay this morning, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 07 January 2023.
The bay this morning.

More light snow overnight combined with what fell yesterday to create the first truly winter landscape I’ve seen since returning to Maine. The eastern sky was glowing purple and orange, so dog and I headed up to the hill early, to try to get a photo of it.

Just beautiful up there. Very few early birds, though a couple interesting ones. Most noteworthy, probably, was a big gang of crows mobbing a hawk or owl or fox or something—more than a dozen crows.

But a flicker presented the best bird photo. They’ve been wintering over for several years now.

Warmed up later, and will be warm and clear tomorrow. A bluebird day?

Balmy Day

Chickadee in the sumac, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 31 December 2022.
Chickadee in the sumac.

A warm day, a muddy trail, not too much wind, not too awful many birds—but a few! The only species to pose for me was a chickadee, and it turned away. But there were crossbills, and a siskin. And a lovely sky over the bay.

I truly loved this last morning of 2022.
