Woodpecker Day

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017
Pileated Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 February 2017.

Pileated Woodpecker.

Another thawy day, with singing cardinal, chickadee, and titmouse. Also drumming woodpecker.

A pileated woodpecker, in particular. The same male (I feel sure) that I’ve seen drumming on the same utility pole every year since 2014. He called once—possibly twice, if his was the same voice I heard ascending the hill about a half-hour before. And at the summit, I heard the gentle notes of another pileated, one that was drilling off in the woods a ways. It might’ve been the female. (I saw her a week or two ago down by the parking lot.)

I stood and watched the drumming woodpecker for six or seven minutes, as Jack stood silently by.
