Pause and listen

Eastern Chipmunk.

Nippy again this morning. Cloudless again, as well. Not so windy, though.

On my arrival with Jack at Beech Hill this morning, right away I heard a brightly singing House Finch. It was perched in a tree above where I parked. Stood there and listened—but didn’t see it fly away. I did, however, then hear the song of a Brown Creeper, very close. I paused and listened, walked and listened. Never did catch sight of the bird.

The hike commenced pretty much this way—heard a bird, didn’t see it—until, at the summit, I heard the song of a Song Sparrow, scanned the eastern slope, and spotted the bird in a bush about fifty yards away. (Later I saw a chickadee, too.)

A lovely hike, a lovely day. Got lots of work done, talked on the phone with Sarah Snow still expected for overnight and tomorrow—but not as much as originally forecast.
