Pure birding

American Robin, near Clam Cove, Rockport, Maine, 09 April 2015.

American Robin.

Snowed last night, a good five inches, I’d say. Plow guy came and gouged up my parking lot—but that’s OK. He’s dependable.

Worried about the woodcock, but they’ll be all right.

Tufted Titmouse, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 April 2015.

Tufted Titmouse.

Clomped up Beech Hill this afternoon, where none too many had trod. Quite a few birds up there despite the spring snow. No hawks, though. On the other hand, I had a nice ten or twelve minutes of reverie as I stood watching a pair of titmice poke about in a tangle of leafless vegetation, calling occasionally to each other. I can stand for a long while and observe birds just going about their business. They’re like magic to me. Fairies. Or tiny angels. And to watch them—really watch them—is for me the purest form of birding.

Foggy and drippy tonight. I wonder what tomorrow will have in store.
