More robins

Wednesday, March 11th, 2015
American Robin, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 March 2014.

American Robin.

Sun and warmth. More sun, more warmth. Forties (F) today after a warm night has made for a lot more thaw.

My brain kicked in somehow in afternoon as dog and I prepared for our daily hike: I thought to bring snowshoes, just in case. In case the deep snow had turned to unnavigable slush. Was that smart of me, or what? Because the whole of the trail was riddled with two-feet-deep foot holes—or leg holes, more like—from people who didn’t have such forethought (or snowshoes). Even my wide footwear sunk down a foot or so in places. I could really get a feel for how much higher was my vantage than during most of the year. Two, two-and-a-half feet.

Crazy.

Not many species, but a lot of birds. Nearly all of them robins. The area of bare ground had doubled—possibly tripled—and the angle of the sun is noticeably higher.

This is that time between deep winter and Mud Season. Not a bad time of year.
